Guidance for grant applicants

Grants are available from the Atkinson Foundation to support wide ranging projects that provide a benefit to the community of Elloughton-cum-Brough.

What type of projects are eligible for grants?

Over the years the Atkinson Foundation has supported a wide variety of projects and activities. There are no hard and fast criteria that determine the type of project that is eligible. The main consideration is that the community of Brough of and Elloughton will derive some tangible benefit. This could include enhancements to the local environment, improvements to recreational or educational facilities, or providing opportunities for young people, the elderly or some other sector of the community.

Who can apply?

Anyone can apply for a grant, either on behalf of an organisation or themselves. In previous years the Atkinson Foundation has provided grants to a wide variety of applicants.

  • Local schools
  • Playgroups
  • Youth groups
  • Sports clubs
  • Elloughton-cum-Brough Town Council
  • Church groups
  • Community and social groups

Grants have also been awarded to individuals to help them take advantage of opportunites for self-development, such as international exchange visits, advanced extra-curricular sporting and outdoor activities, and overseas voluntary work.

Applications from businesses or profit-making concerns are unlikely to be successful.

How much should I ask for?

Historically grants have been made for various amounts—from a few tens of pounds up to a few hundred. Larger amounts have been awarded in exceptional circumstances. It is unlikely that trustees will award a grant for the full cost of your project. Applications are considered more favourably where there is matched funding from other sources, or where the applicant demonstrates that they are doing their own fundraising to support the project.

When can I apply?

Applications are invited between 1st October and 31st January each year. Applications may also be considered at other times under exceptional circumstances.

How do I apply?

An online application form is available on the Atkinson Foundation website during the application period. A PDF copy is also available to download and print. The printed form may be completed and submitted offline by post.

When are grants awarded?

Once the grant application period is closed, all submissions are considered by the trustees in the light of the evidence provided. Grants are awarded to successful applicants during the following Spring.

When will I know if my application was sucessful?

Once the grant application period has closed the trustees will meet to consider both online and postal submissions. The trustees are volunteers and meetings are arranged subject to availability and individual circumstances, so the decision making process can take four to six weeks. When grants are awarded, all applicants will be notified of the trustees’ decision regardless of whether their application was successful or otherwise.

Can I appeal if my application was refused?

No. The trustees’ decision is final. The trustees will usually provide an indication of why an application was unsuccessful. If you feel that your project is still suitable for consideration then please apply again next year, taking into account any comments from the trustees.
